Our decision to travel the world had always been a dream. One day we would quit our jobs and just do it. One day. It actually happening took us both quite by surprise and unfortunately it wasn’t the best of surprises. Mel and I both lost very dear loved ones in the last two years, unexpectedly and with that we realised that the only time to do it, to do anything, was now!
We have been so fortunate this year, we have visited some of the most beautiful places in the world, camping at the Grand Canyon after our wedding in Vegas, exploring the incredible temples and landmarks of Japan and we are currently backpacking around SouthEast Asia.
However the part of this trip that has had the biggest impact for us, it was a truly life changing experience, was the beginning of our trip, when we decided to cycle across Europe. More specifically, that special moment we cycled from the Italian Alps right into the beautiful mountainous scenes of Slovenia.
As we passed that first sign, into Slovenia, we felt such pride from cycling across countries and the downhill glide we were met with is something neither of us will ever forget. We soared past the mountains as everything got greener. It was the best feeling in the world.
We set up camp in this wonderful place, our tent resting just beneath the mountains. Then set out to explore. We walked through the town of Kranjska Gora, an idyllic, quaint little place reminiscent of the ski towns you see in movies. We hope to get back one day to see it in winter.
We spent the day at Lake Bled and we were in awe of how lovely this place was. We had never seen water so clear. It was truly a magical place.
Now Mel had already done a bit of cross country cycling but I was a real newbie so it was a challenge for us, that’s for sure.
But we fell in love with the freedom the bikes brought, we adore camping out in the mountains and under the stars. We experienced beauty beyond measure and such overwhelming kindness from the cycling community. We stayed in their homes all over Europe on the nights we were not camping. It changed the way we view travel, by bike is by far the best way! Most of all it made us happy.
