My trip to Thailand was completely spontaneous and sudden. A few of my friends invited my boyfriend and I a month before their scheduled trip and it didn’t take long to convince ourselves to come along, especially with the how affordable the flights were.
We began our trip in an island off the Gulf of Thailand. Thailand has many beautiful tropical islands but we opted to visit Koh Samui. Koh Samui is known to be a backpacker’s paradise but I’d say it’s quite similar to a resort destination in the Caribbean. We began our journey to Thailand with about 36 hours of travel. A 15 hour flight to Beijing, and another 5 hour flight to Bangkok. We had to wait for our next flight to Surat Thani the following morning which wasn’t until 8am. We finally got on our last flight to Surat Thani, which was only an hour flight then took a 45 minute car ride to the ferry which would take us to Koh Samui in about an hour and a half.
After a long 36 hours of travel, we made it to the beautiful island of Koh Samui. We were driven into the middle of the island via private car where we got to see all the beautiful views of the island. We arrived at our hotel and met with our friends who arrived a few days before us. Our hotel was right on shore of Chaweng Beach. Adjacent to our hotel were a bunch of beach clubs and activities for tourists to enjoy.
I came across this tour that would take half the day but would take me to all the key points of the island. I opted to go on this tour alone as my group and boyfriend had other activities scheduled. I was a bit nervous to venture off in a foreign country alone, but I knew I couldn’t miss out on this opportunity.
The tour began with a jeep that sat about 9 people. We then took a bumpy ride to the first destination named Granma and Grandpa. This place is known for it’s unique rock formations and yes, the rock is shaped like exactly what you were thinking.
We then journeyed to our next destination to the the beautiful Namuang Waterfall. (insert photo 3A625) The tour guide gave us the option to swim which I was prepared for however, the color of the water didn’t convince me to do so. The remainder of the tour took us to beautiful statues and monuments but most importantly gave me time to interact with my group and meet other tourists. We then opted to jump on the top of the jeep which had no seatbelts and we all nearly fell off. It was one of the most scary yet enjoyable moments of my life.
After my tour was finished I returned back to my hotel and got a good night’s rest for the following day as we went island hopping.
This island hopping experience was delightful. We were taken via boat to a few small islands and got the opportunity to kayak, swim, and snorkel. I highly recommend taking an island hopping tour and a jeep tour if you ever visit Koh Samui. You really get a lot for how little you pay for.
