My first big trip, backpacking in Prague

When I talk to people about travelling, they often ask me “What was your favorite destination?”. Now, that is a hard question to answer, but this time I have been asked an even harder question “What is your most amazing travel experience?”.

After some time of pondering around, I came to the conclusion there may not be an answer to this question. I have however, chosen one moment or memory which truly marked my travelling adventures.I realized that travelling, more precisely backpacking, had to start playing a bigger and more important role in my life.

This moment, or even series of moments, took place about 4 years ago. I was only 16 years old and decided it was time to take a trip, with my friend Lottie. Much to our parents surprise, we set off to Prague with only a hostel booked and a backpack. Little did we know we had just set off to spend one of the best weeks of our lives.

Within the first hour in Prague we had met some of the most wonderful and welcoming people yet, we had discovered Prague by night and were ready to discover all Prague had to offer. And so we did, that week, we followed a map we had found, a use it map, and walked many many kilometers. From cute little cafes, the John Lennon wall, Charle’s Bridge and the watching the sunset from the Petrin monument overlooking the entire city.

Everyday we were surprised by loads of people we met, many people were out there travelling the world, and for us this was only a weeks escape before heading back to school. Within the trip I would say my 2 favorite moments:

The first was when we met a German girl and an English girl, and we went to an organic market where you could taste so many different local products. It was by the river and we walked and walked and tasted so much food until we were completely full. However, not full enough to say no to ice cream we had picked up from a local ice cream shop close by the market. We finished off this beautiful day by watching the sunset from the Letna park. A breathtaking sight.

The second, was at the airport when both Lottie and I had tears in our eyes, tears of joy, this had been an incredible week. The start of many trips to come.
